EVERYONE ON THE CREW pulls together when they row. Its much the same for the engineers who design the boats. As a manufacturer of racing-standard rowing boats, Filippi Boats of Donoratico, Italy, is using computational fluid dynamics to design what engineers hope will be winning boats next month at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Using CFD to simulate a rowing boat is more complex than using the application to optimize a boats hull design, which is a common use for the technology, according to Filippi Lido, who owns Filippi Boats. While most boats are propelled through the water at a constant rate, a rowing boat moves forward with the crews rhythmic rowing action. As the boat accelerates and decelerates through each stroke, both the position of the boat and its attitude in the water are dynamically modified, which makes for a complex problem with multiple degrees of freedom. For the past year, engineers at Filippi Boats have been using Comet CFD software from CD adapco of New York. The boatmaker is also working with engineers at the Universita Politecnico di Milano to design the boats. The engineers simulate the periodicaccelerations caused by each stroke of the oars. The accelerations cause time-dependent changes of resistance and propulsion.

American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) The largest American burying beetle reintroduction effort in the 12-year history of the species recovery program took place recently on Nantucket Island off the Massachusetts coast. The Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, raised well over 300 of the endangered beetles for release on Nantucket Island, a historic locality for the species. On June 11 and 12,320 American burying beetles (160 pairs) were given dead quail for food (the beetles require carrion to reproduce) and released at the Massachusetts Audubon Societys Sesachacha Wildlife Sanctuary. With each pair of beetles capable of raising 10-20 larvae, the 2001 release may result in thousands of beetles on the island by late fall. This effort is probably one of the largest reintroductions ever undertaken for an endangered insect species. Present to document the work was a film crew from the TV program, Wild Moments, and the Providence Journal newspaper. Partners in the work include the Rhode Island Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Massachusetts Audubon Society, University of Massachusetts Boston Field Station, University of Rhode Island, Maria Mitchell Natural History Museum, and Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis) As a result of a multi-agency partnership, endangered Indiana bats have been documented to migrate to the Lake Champlain Valley in Vermont from a hibernaculure in New York. Biologists tagged five Indiana bats (four females and one male) with radio transmitters as the bats left their hibernaculum (hibernation site) in early May. Three females were located by air and subsequently by land in Vermont within one to six days after release. Multiple roost trees for two of the females were identified; most of the roost trees were shagbark hickories. Evening counts of bats leaving the roosts ranged from 4 to 120 bats (probably more than one species roosted together). All of the Indiana bats were found on private land and all landowners granted permission for field staff to locate the bats. The success of this study was due to a substantial cooperative effort by state and federal agencies and concerned citizens. Staff and equipment were provided by our New England and New York Field Offices, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (which also provided the airplane and pilot), the Green and White Mountain national forests, and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources loaned additional equipment. High school and college students also volunteered their time.

The blister beetle is both a blessing and a curse to farmers. In the larval stage, blister beetles are welcomed by farmers, because they eat grasshopper eggs, which are notoriously destructive to crops. As adults, however, blister beetles develop a ravenous appetite for many of the same crops they once helped to protect from the grasshoppers.
After a single season of wear, waterproof and water-repellent boots need some TLC. Only use leather conditioner on leather boots with waterproof Gore-Tex linings, since waterproofing agents will block the boots breathability. Treat all other waterproof leather boots at least twice a season with a leather-waterproofing treatment, such as Nikwax (see right) or Sno-Seal. The Association of Charity Shops annual conference this week will set a challenge for future survival: how to persuade customers to buy second-hand clothes for the same price as new ones. John Tough, retail director of British Red Cross, said: “There are more and more discount shops on the high street. They are so competitively priced that they are a real threat to charity shops whose main interest is clothing, such as ours. People can buy new clothes for a lot less than they could 10 or even five years ago, so their interest in buying second-hand is decreased. “The upside is that if they buy, say, three new t-shirts for (pounds) 10, they are likely to be throwing something else out. That means they have more to donate, but we just have to keep up interest from people wanting to buy from us. Thailand Royal Family Takes Delivery of Second LCW Limousine
SAN ANTONIO — LCW
Automotive Corp., worldwide manufacturer of limousines and
custom-built luxury vehicles, completed its second Limousine for the
Royal Family of Thailand in March.
The 24-inch stretch limousine was built on an LCW “CEO Series” platform,
and featured a lavish array of personalized amenities. The roof of the
car was raised three inches for additional headroom and longer doors
were installed for the rear seating compartment, providing easier entry
and egress.
The air craft composite long doors, flat floor and raised roof are a
proprietary specialty of LCW.
Considered “short stretches” or “corporate” limousines, LCW’s CEO models
range in size from 6 to 70 inches. The company “stretches” limousines up
to 130 inches on the Cadillac DTS platform, or 120 inches with a Lincoln
